First step in protecting our children on the Web

Be aware of hazards and prevention are the two main keys to prevent the exposure of our children and teenagers to the many dangers that exist on the Internet.

I personally believe that you first must to know what we're facing to be aware of the seriousness of this issue so we can take actions on this.

Let us see what these dangers are.

In this article we explore the out of control and undue exposure of images and video with high explicit sexual content.

On the Internet you can, by typing in a simple search engine like yahoo, google, msn, etc, a few words on these issues that we consider unsuitable for children, to find thousands and thousands of pages that explicitly talk about these things without any discretion. What is worse, just entering the links or links that generate these searches, you can see harmful content (text, video and images) without any warning or alert.

To be fair I must clarify that there are sites that make these warnings and some go a little further and put some controls which of them I consider very simple, but at the end they are controls that try to obstruct the entry to minors. However the vast majority do not do it.

I invite you to go to your favorite search engine and type a few words not suitable for children and you will realize how easy it is to enter these pages. So you type the word "sadomasochism" you will see that only in the second link as a result you may enter to a page full of images referring to a practice that I do not pretend to judge but that is definitely for adults.

Now, I am not trying to ban these topics to children or young people, I am suggesting that they must be known with proper guidance and objectivity according to age, either through by their parents or by true professionals. Thanks for reading this. I will continue in coming weeks with more dangers.

Purpose

Today is not unusual to find that children and teenagers are more familiar with technology and especially with computers and Internet than their parents or teachers themselves.

Until then, there is not problem with that, on the contrary, we are very proud they to be so smart.

But , do you know what dangers on the Internet are our children exposed to?

If you don´t know, the Internet is an open network of information where thousands or even millions of users around the world are comming each minute. Unfortunately, many of them for reasons that are not suitable for minors. Topics such as pornography (explicit sex often absurd) in images, videos, chat's, etc.., Violence, satanic Sects, etc.. are accesible for our children on the Web without any Adult guidance.

The idea then this site is to provide a space for teaching and learning about these issues and especially to guide parents in how to form an integral part of protecting our children.

We will be discussing topics such as online content, prevention and control tools, laws, among others.
